Basics of Coordinate Metrology
Unit 13:  Accuracy - Display Error of a CMM

Step 6 of 8

Each measuring machine has deviations. To be able to estimate them, information on the indication error of a CMM E according to ISO 10360-2 is available for each coordinate measuring machine.

This indication error of a CMM is specified in the form of a formula:

E = k1 + 1/k2 * L ,   where L is the length to be measured.

Example: k1 = 2 µm, k2 =400mm/µm, the length to be measured L = 200 mm.

Hence, the length measuring uncertainty E is 2 µm+200/400 µm = 2.5 µm (see graphic opposite). This means that all measured values have a measuring machine uncertainty of at most 2.5 µm.
