As described in Unit 7 (Structure of coordinate measuring machines), there are different styli for (almost) all possible measuring tasks. The examples on the previous page explain how to select styli suitable for the task at hand. In any case, there are three rules of thumb to remember for the stylus selection:
Stylus tips should always be as short and stable as possible.
""Exotic" stylus trees have
many screwed joints and thus many potential sources of problems and
should therefore be avoided: if in doubt, a stylus change is better than
an exotic stylus tree.
In addition to the stylus geometry, the probing force also has a decisive effect on the measurement.
