In the column type, the column (X axis) with the height-adjustable cantilever (Z and Y axes) is moving on the machine table, which represents the machine base.

In the gantry type, the moveable components are not mounted on a common machine table. The machine base is formed by the foundation.
The support (Y axis) moves together with the ram (Z axis) on the moveable gantry.

In the cantilever type, the machine base carries the moveable machine table (X axis) and the moveable cantilever
(Y axis) together with the ram (Z axis).
The X axis and Y axis, including the Z axis, are decoupled from one another and must be synchronized.

In the bridge type with stationary machine table, the latter forms the machine base on which the bridge (X axis) is moving. As with the gantry type, the support (Y axis) moves together
with the ram (Z axis) on the bridge.
In machines of the bridge type equipped with moveable table, the bridge and the machine bed form a unit. The movement in the X direction is effected by the table.
